Google decided to the name the next release of android KitKat.
For months we've been hearing about Key Lime as the name of the next release of android: version 5.

First of all, this is no major release, just 4.4.
Second of all, this is the first time that Google gives a brand name for an Android version (unless you count Bender).

Some people suggest that KitKat is a good choice, it's international instead of English-only, and I guess that's true, but this still feels a bit odd.

Brands were obviously intentionally avoided in previous releases because
a. it would probably cost money to use the name
b. but more importantly - it would feel odd to have an open source project be named after a corporate brand.

A lot of open source projects use interesting names for releases.
Ubuntu, Firefox and Eclipse to name a few, but they usually don't partner up with a candy company for a new release.

Google says that there was no money exchanged in the branding agreement, no mention about KitKats though.

At any rate, a new release of android is always welcomed, woohoo!

One does wonder though if the release after the next one will be named M&M.
